Mary Alice Scholarship
  • The Mary Alice Scholarship was established in 1998, in memory of Bob Alexander’s sister who died of leukemia asa child. In 2001, it became a tax-deductible charity when it received 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. It is currently under the umbrella of the Mary Alice Education Fund, a project of the Congressional District Programs. Funds are primarily raised through the tutoring and SAT programs offered by Bob Alexander, president of MaxTheTest.com,Inc. and author of the “Demystifying Standardized Tests” series. Corporate and private donors provide additional funds.

  • The scholarship fund currently supports three major activities. Firstly, it provides scholarships to academically promising students who have overcome major adversity in their lives. Selection of recipients is a highly competitive process. For example, in 2009 there were 335 applicants. The scholarship recipients had GPAs in excess of 4.0 and SAT/ACT scores that were exceptionally high: over 1450 for the reading and math sections of the SAT or 32 on the ACT, or both. Recipients are also selected based on recommendations and financial need. Successful applicants have attended such prestigious universities as Stanford, UCLA, Cornell, Tulane, Boston University, and the University of Texas.

  • Secondly, grants are provided to elementary schools to support “Most-improved Student Awards.” At schools that receive a grant, classroom teachers identify, using their own criteria, the students who have shown significant improvement during the school year. Generally, teachers choose based on effort, behavior, and academic progress. Students receive some type of commemorative award, such as a t-shirt, trophy, or plaque commemorating their efforts.

  • Finally, students who do not have the financial ability to pay the fees associated with programs offered by Bob Alexander are provided partial or full scholarships.

  • In 2009, we were pleased to be able to provide over $15,000 in support through the Mary Alice Scholarship program.
